The Jesuits

The Society of Jesus and the Betrayal of the Roman Catholic Church

The Jesuits

by Malachi Martin

Malachi Martin is a Catholic priest who is a former Jesuit professor and the author of the national bestsellers Vatican, The Final Conclave, and Hostage to the Devil. In this book Malachi Martin unravels the hidden politics and alliances of popes and cardinals, bishops and priests.

"An engrossing account of the history of the Society of Jesus, with two Basques, for a time, the bookends to the story: Inigo (not Ignatius, nor Ignacio, for that matter), who expired in 1556, and Father General Pedro Arrupe, who was removed by Pope John Paul II in October, 1981. Martin is masterful in delineating the conflicts which have beset the order and the papacy (though Martin would no doubt say "The Church") over the centuries, but his book is really concerned with the succumbing of the Society to Modernism - particularly in the guise of Liberation Theology, and the desperate efforts of the last two popes to return the Society to its initial and rightful place as "the Pope's men." Highly recommendable as a basic account by an author of great understanding and erudition, of Jesuitism, "Modernism" as the term is understood in Catholic circles, and Liberation Theology."

Malachi Martin's background:

Malachi Martin, eminent theologian, expert on the Catholic Church, former Jesuit and professor at the Vatican's Pontifical Biblical Institute, is the author of the national best-sellers Vatican, The Final Conclave, Hostage to the Devil, and The Jesuits. He was trained in theology at Louvain. There he received his doctorates in Semitic Languages, Archeology and Oriental History. He subsequently studied at Oxford and at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. From 1958 to 1964 he served in Rome, where he was a close associate of the renowned Jesuit Cardinal Augustin Bea and Pope John XXIII. He now lives in New York City.

"Modernism is defined in the book as the harnessing of religious beliefs and doctrines to the prevailing cultural norms and climes of any given age or day. It means that one can adjust one's beliefs as one sees fit or however one thinks one should believe and act. It is in direct contradiction to the historical premises of Roman Catholism which are that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ, that he has teaching authority within the Church, that there is absolute truth which the Church assists mankind in finding and understanding, that the doctrines and practices of the Church are promulgated through the magisterium (bishops and priests) to the laity who profess and believe, and that the most important single event in human history was the redemption of mankind through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ to expiate the sin of Adam. The book's central thesis is that the Jesuits, known for centuries as the pope's men, are in open rebellion against the Pope and that they work no longer to sustain the Pope or the Church. By the way, they take a special fourth vow of obedience to the Pope. The book draws comparisons between the events of the 15th and 16th century and today, e.g., discovering of the new world, scientific discovery of a heliocentric versus a geocentric world and the Renaissance, where man is the measure of all things, and social and scientific changes today. Originally when the Jesuits were established by St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540 it was their charter to teach and preach the gospel showing clearly that there was no conflict between faith and reason. This is the basis of Thomistic theology and that theology is the undergirding of Roman Catholic thought as well. They did this very well until the late 20th century when modernism overwhelmed their thought, teachings and actions. For example, their involvement with revolution theology is South America, the writings of Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. and George Tyrell, S.J. Malachi Martin maintains that the Jesuits have completely embraced modernism in their thinking. The Jesuits believe today that things like papal infallibility, original sin, homosexuality, the sacraments, the meaning of redemption and salvation and many other traditional teachings as taught by the Church for two milleniums are no longer valid and that these things should be rethought in light of modern life and needs. All is relative! Heretofore, the Jesuits would have defended those fundamental Catholic teachings and the Pope. Finally, they say that the Church is not the hierarchy or structure, but it is the local community and "whatever" it wants to believe. There is a complete democratization of the acceptance of what one will believe and therefore an adversion to being taught or told what to believe by someone else, particularly a bishop or priest, and specifically the Pope. Since Vatican II and particularly after the fourth sessions of Vatican II and with a few nebulous wordings in some of the documents of Vatican II the council seemed to release everyone from any adherence to the hurch's direct teachings in favor of believing what one will, and that one religion is as good as another. Actually Vatican II reaffirmed the historically teachings of the Church, the Pope, infallibility but that is not how it got into our daily thinking. Thus the mess the Church has today and an excellent description of it is given in the book The Jesuits."
