". . . . Know, then, beloved, that I have also appeared in Yugoslavia to these special hearts, young in body but ancient of days, as the Queen of Peace. For Peace is a Pillar of Fire that is thrust as a Sword in the very midst of Communist territory. Thus, it is a warning to World Communism that whereas My supposed representatives in the Vatican have not challenged their presence, lo, I, Mary, have challenged it! Except you receive Him as a little child, ye shall in no wise enter in.

"Beloved, the message is plain. There is one thing they cannot control — neither myself nor the hearts of those whose minds are stayed upon me. Blessed ones, Medjugorje has become as a figure-eight flow where so many hearts give attention to Me that the Light may descend as judgment.

"Understand, blessed ones, that I have come there to prepare this people for calamities to come. The simple of heart need to be reminded of their original faith. To deliver to them a message beyond that which they comprehend within the supposed security of the Church would only serve to neutralize the message and their opinions of its authenticity. Thus, to depart from scripture or canon would be to obviate the very purpose of My coming, which is to draw a tremendous devotion of people of every faith to the Heart of God and the Divine Mother, that in this sacred tie to Heaven they might pass through a darkness to come.

"Blessed ones, I came there to prepare them also for the transition. Many souls may be taken unless a great Divine Intervention does take place by your hand and heart and oneness in this Community. Thus, realize, to the simple of heart a simple message when lived does mean a great increase of Light that shall prepare them in the appropriate hour to know the higher Truth of the Holy Spirit that is given to you to know.

"I have desired, then, that you should see and understand the Light, the determination, the joy, the confidence that the seeing of Myself has given to the six — and which through them has been radiated to the many. Blessed are ye who have not seen and yet who have believed. I repeat the words of My Son that you might know that it was the Messenger's prayer long ago — she understanding the great demands made upon the Light of the Universe Itself in the appearances of Myself and the Masters — to let the Great Law withhold the appearances and rather give that Light to the healing of the world, to the balancing of karma.

"This the Messenger did request, thus believing in Us and declaring, she having already so seen, that there should be no necessity for the repetition of tangible appearances to reinforce faith but only the release of the Word that Itself should be for the conversion of those who also have the inner sight to see, not as form and figure necessarily (but sometimes indeed), but seeing as becoming, seeing as total oneness with Our Presence.

"Beloved ones, therefore, to each is given what is a requirement for the quickening. What We would say to you, then, in this hour is by way of preparation for the coming of the Lord of the World. I have been sent by the Father to the end that if there needs be chastening it should come from My Lips to spare the Lord of the World of going into that chastening or of raising that Rod. . . . ."

In the above excerpt taken from Mother Mary's address through Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the Messenger of the Great White Brotherhood, on May 11, 1987, Mary spoke about Medjugorje four years before the ethnic warfare broke out in Bosnia-Herzegovina (formerly part of Yugoslavia). Serbia invaded Croatia in June 1991 and expanded its offensive into Bosnia in March 1992. An estimated 250,000 had died in the warring among Croats, Serbs and Muslims; and more than one million had been left homeless.

The almost daily appearances of Mother Mary to six youths in the small village of Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina (former part of Yugoslavia), since June 25, 1981, had been met with skepticism and persecution. The seers, who ranged in age from 10 to 16 when the apparitions began, had been interrogated by authorities of the Yugoslavian Communist government and the Catholic Church. At one point the local police detained the youths, told them to recant, and threatened to have them committed to a mental asylum. The parish pastor and other priests at first doubted the authenticity of the apparitions, causing one of the seers, Ivanka Ivankovic, to remark, "The only ones who do not believe us are the priests and the police!" The youths have been subjected to medical, psychological and psychiatric examinations to determine if their behavior is being caused by drugs, hypnosis or other factors, and they have also been closely examined while in the state of ecstasy during the Blessed Mother's visitations. Bishop Zanic of Mostar, the diocese where Medjugorje is located, had openly voiced his doubt about the apparitions, declaring, "The phenomenon at Medjugorje will be the greatest shame of the Church in the twentieth century. One can say that these are hallucinations, illusions, hypnosis or lies." In 1986 the commission he impaneled to investigate the apparitions reached a similar conclusion. Vatican officials, however, not satisfied with that investigation, instructed the Church hierarchy to undertake a second one in order to determine if the visions are worthy of belief. (4)

The Communist government, alarmed at the religious revival that was taking place and the huge crowds of people who gathered at the place of the apparitions (a hillside overlooking Medjugorje), took repressive measures. Several priests and sisters were arrested and from August 1981 to May 1983 police forbade anyone to visit the place of the apparitions and all religious services outside the church were banned. From August 1981 to January 1982, the appearances took place at various sites, such as fields, woods, and the homes of the youths as well as many other homes in the village. Since January 12, 1982, the Blessed Mother has appeared in the rectory, the sacristy, and the choir loft of the parish church. Although the apparitions have not been authenticated by the Church, as many as 50,000 people reportedly visit Medjugorje on holy days. (5)

Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop of San Angelo, Texas reported: "During my Ad Lumina visit to Rome with the Bishops of Texas in April 1988, I asked our Holy Father his opinion about Medjugorje during the private conversation I had with him. He spoke very favorably about the happenings there, pointing out the good which had been done for people. During the lunch which the Texan bishops later had with the Holy Father, Medjugorje came up for further discussion. Again His Holiness spoke of how it has changed the lives of people who visit it, and said that so far the messages are not contrary to the Gospel." (3)

On August 1, 1989, Pope John Paul II spoke to a group of Italian physicians dedicated to defending unborn life and to making scientific and medical studies on the apparitions, as reported by Bishop Paul Hnilica, SJ, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome: "Today's world has lost its sense of the supernatural, but many are searching for it - and find it in Medjugorje, through prayer, penance and fasting."

"Children, darkness reigns over the whole world. People are attracted by many things and they forget about the more important. Light won't reign in the world until people accept Jesus, until they live His Words, which is the Word of the Gospel. Dear children, this is the reason for My Presence among you for such a long time: to lead you on the Path of Jesus. I want to save you and, through you, to save the whole world. Many people now live without faith; some don't even want to hear about Jesus, but they still want peace and satisfaction! Children, here is the reason why I need your prayer: prayer is the only way to save the human race."

"Dear children!

"Also today I call you to convert and to more firmly believe in God. Children, you seek peace and pray in different ways, but you have not yet given your hearts to God for Him to fill them with His Love. So, I am with you to teach you and to bring you closer to the Love of God. If you love God above all else, it will be easy for you to pray and to open your hearts to Him. Thank you for having responded to My Call."
